aeLiXihr-hi, i made a partition for data and installed KX 14.4 on a different one. I seem to need sudo rights to approach the data partition, but it does not open a password dialogscreen... is that normal?15:56
*** george999 has joined #kxstudio15:57
wolftunefalktx`: hi, I don't know what to do to test https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxguitar/bugs/53/#bcd515:58
LAbotTitle: TuxGuitar / Bugs / #53 crashing under KDE with oxygen-gtk gtk2 theme (at sourceforge.net)15:58
wolftuneseems maybe this will fix things15:58
holsteinaeLiXihr-: this would be a standard thing to address from most any operating system16:02
*** beatpanic has joined #kxstudio16:02
*** FergusL has joined #kxstudio16:02
holsteinaeLiXihr-: if you havent done anything to make the partitions that your user made "read/write", then you'll need to do so16:02
holsteinaeLiXihr-: you can refer to something like http://askubuntu.com/questions/175739/how-do-i-remount-a-filesystem-as-read-write16:02
LAbotTitle: mount - How do I remount a filesystem as read/write? - Ask Ubuntu (at askubuntu.com)16:02
holsteinthough, i would search specifically about my partition type16:02
*** daeavelwyn has joined #kxstudio16:02
aeLiXihr-holstein: thanks16:03
*** Animtim has joined #kxstudio16:05
aeLiXihr-holstein: probably i should specify: i have another data partition(on a different HD) if i try to approach that one it DOES open a password dialogscreen...16:06
holsteinapproach?16:06
holsteinyou mean, mount?16:06
holsteinanyways, if you are not doing anything that makes the operating system have permission, it wont16:06
aeLiXihr-i dunno... i think it is mounted(it shows up in the list left in dolphin)16:07
aeLiXihr-by doubleclicking the one datapartition it asks for a password and after entering i can read and write to it. But by doubleclicking the other nothing happens.16:09
holsteinanytime you say "i think", stop and confirm so you know, yes or no16:09
holsteinits "normal" to have to deal with permissions, to mount ext filesystems read/write16:10
holsteinthis is, as i said, not really specific to operating systems, or filemanagers16:10
*** topyli has quit IRC16:10
aeLiXihr-I can however enter if i use sudo dolphin16:10
holsteinaeLiXihr-: i understand16:10
holsteinaeLiXihr-: please consider reading the documentation upstream about your specific filesystem16:10
aeLiXihr-cannot confirm since i dunno how to test, can only describe behaviour16:10
holsteinaeLiXihr-: "mounted" is not behavior"16:11
holsteinits either mounted, or not.. check that it is..16:11
holsteinbut, i can tell you, first hand, and with the documenation im linking.. ext partitions need to be addressed16:11
holsteinwhat did i do? i added the drive/partition to fstab.. i have a "tracking" hard disk that i mount from anothher partition, as you are...16:12
holsteini add the location to fstab, it gets permissions it needs by the commands i give, by basically following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingANewHardDrive16:13
LAbotTitle: InstallingANewHardDrive - Community Help Wiki (at help.ubuntu.com)16:13
holsteini skip to the parts about persistence.. i *do* *not* partition the drive. that will erase it..16:13
aeLiXihr-i checked: the mountpoint is /media/onno/backupdata16:14
aeLiXihr-is that good?16:14
holsteinaeLiXihr-: friend.. there is no "good or bad" here..16:14
holsteinaeLiXihr-: there is the kxstudio install you made. you have a partition you didnt make with that user or install16:14
aeLiXihr-ok, i do not understand your link16:14
holsteinaeLiXihr-: you facilitate permissions, to get read/write access16:15
holsteinaeLiXihr-: feel free and ask a question16:15
holsteinso far, you have only asked if thats normal, to have another drive or partition that is mounting read only.. and its quite normal16:15
aeLiXihr-ok, thanks16:16
holsteinso, if you have questions, specifically, about an error message, etc, ask16:16
holsteinyou do no want to run the file manager as root all the time.. and you dont need to..16:16
aeLiXihr-yes i made that datapartition with gparted16:16
aeLiXihr-no i do not run the file manager as root all the time, it was just to check.16:17
*** george999 has quit IRC16:17
aeLiXihr-okay i think i understand what you are saying: i need to facilitate permissions to the kxstudio install, to get read/write access to the data partition, right?16:20
holsteinno16:20
holsteinthis has  nothing to do with kxstudio specifically16:20
aeLiXihr-oh16:20
holsteinanyone, on any os needs to facilitate permissions..16:20
holsteinwith *most* file system types..16:20
aeLiXihr-*confused16:21
holsteinsure16:21
holsteintry just facilitating permissions16:21
holsteinor, sharing some facts16:21
holsteini still dont know what filesystem you have16:21
aeLiXihr-ext416:21
holsteinim assuming ext416:21
aeLiXihr-yes16:22
holsteinwhen *i* added an ext4 partition to my production machine, *just* like you are trying to do.. for me to address the issue where i want write permissions, i followed the guides im giving16:22
holsteini added the mountpoint to fstab.. so that, the partition is mounted *each* time, at boot..16:22
aeLiXihr-this, right? http://askubuntu.com/questions/175739/how-do-i-remount-a-filesystem-as-read-write16:23
holsteini chown that mount point, so my user has the permissions i want16:23
LAbotTitle: mount - How do I remount a filesystem as read/write? - Ask Ubuntu (at askubuntu.com)16:23
holsteinagain, there is no" right"16:23
holsteinthere is, what you have, and what you want.. what you have isnt write-able.. so, you make it write-able16:23
holsteinthere are several ways to facilitate this..16:23
holsteinyou are not trying to "remount" a filesystem..16:24
holsteinyou are trying to access, peristently, an ext4 partition, with read/write access.., correct?16:24
aeLiXihr-yes,16:24
holsteincool..16:24
holsteinso, you can add the drive to fstab, and specify a persisten mountpoint.. then, chown that location..16:25
aeLiXihr-oh the other link :)16:25
aeLiXihr-https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingANewHardDrive16:25
LAbotTitle: InstallingANewHardDrive - Community Help Wiki (at help.ubuntu.com)16:25
holsteinits a bit complex, since, you are not installing a new hard drive.. that guide just happens to outline the steps well, at the end..16:29
aeLiXihr-ok thanks16:34
aeLiXihr-will check16:34
holsteincheck?16:35
holsteinchecking wont do it.. ;) fstab for persistent mount.. chown for permission..16:35

WinfoxHey guys19:14
WinfoxAnyone around to help troubleshoot something with me?19:14
holsteinjust ask.. maybe a volunteer can assist19:15
Winfoxalright19:15
WinfoxI'me having some trouble getting KXstudio to boot from USB19:16
WinfoxI've been trying to install KXstudio 14.04.2 to a USB. So far I've tried Unetbootin, Universal USB installer, the isohybrid command with DD inside of Ubuntu 14.04.3. Every time I try to boot to from the USB I get an "operating system not found, reboot your sytem" error.19:16
holsteini would remove things from the euqation, and see what is what.. as in, 1. can the machine boot *any* usb media? 2. can the stick i make boot on another machine that is known to boot USB media 3. do other iso's boot?19:17
holsteini see that *specific* message when something is not finding an OS.. meaning, the boot loader.. or, the machine is trying to boot a disk that im not expecting it to boot.. that doesnt have an OS on it..19:18
WinfoxYeah I have a couple of distros on a few USBs. I run Kali, Ubuntu, Mint and a few other recovery tools all boot on the machine I'm trying to get to boot KXstudio. Right now I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu to the USB drive and then upgrading it to KXstudio but I'd like to try everything else I can first before doing that.19:20
WinfoxThe system I'm running has a 1 500gb hard drive running windows with 70gbs of that allocated to a Ubuntu system, i've been dual booting these two side by side for about 3 years now without a problem while also occasionally booting other distros via USB when needed.19:24
falktx`wolftune: did you try their x64 binaries, listed on the bug report?19:28
wolftunefalktx`: I wasn't sure how to… was waiting for your judgement19:30

holsteinnope.. sounds like a plan..19:38
holsteinif the kxstudio iso is the only one thats not booting, id go with the one that is. the ubuntu ones that are working..19:38
