gartralhey all, so i have an odd setup, i have a digidesign 002 rack unit, and an onyx 820i daisy chained on firewire, they both work (the dd002r has it's host of minor issues, but.. I'm ignoring that, for now) my thinking was that i want to use the 002 as a sort of extended input bank in kack, but it doesn't appear that cadance will allow for thisany tips?15:17
holsteinAFAIK, digidesign doesnt support linux15:19
gartralholstein: officially, they don't but I found and tweaked some drivers that let me use it15:20
holsteinnothing about linux is specifically preventing you from doing that, but, i say, thin out some of your hardware, there, and get linux audio working..15:20
holsteingartral: sure.. but, thats the issue15:20
holsteinnow, you have *another* party in the mix.. the creators of those drivers15:20
gartralholstein: ohh my setup works ok, I just can't use both interfaces consurrently as far as i can see15:21
holsteinas far as you can see?15:21
holsteinanyways, test that you can use jack with just one of the interfaces15:21
gartralthe cadance front end doesn't provide me with any clear was of using *both* interfaces for input15:21
holsteinright15:21
gartralholstein: I know i can15:22
holsteingartral: try it, friend..15:22
holsteincan you?15:22
gartralholstein: yes15:22
gartralboth work fine on their own15:22
holsteinso, thats a no, then15:22
gartralwhat do you mean "that's a no"?15:23
holsteinthats a no, to, they both work15:23
holsteinyou dont know that you can, and, im quite sure, it wont work that way15:23
holsteingartral: i would look for folks who are doing exactly what you are trying to do15:24
gartralthey do work, but i see no way of using both devices inputs /at the same time/ I can either use the onyx as my input, or the 002, not both at once15:24
holsteinright15:24
holsteini dont either..15:24
holsteinAFAIK, you cant15:24
holsteinas in, its not supported15:25
holsteingartral: all i can tell you is, what i have decided to do, as a linux user15:25
holsteinim not daisy chaining firewire devices together..15:26
holsteinon *any* os, its not a "good" idea to mix devices like that15:26
holsteingartral: i would look into the ffado community.. whatever is able to facilitate what you are trying to do will trickle into *every* distro from there.. or alsa-firewire15:27
holsteinyou can try #opensourcemusicians or #ardour and see if anyone is using 2 firewire devices15:28
holsteinotherwise, its typically avoided to use multiple devices, generally15:29
gartralholstein: my reasoning is this: both devices are recognized and usable, even daisychained, no dropouts or xruns with reasonable latency, but i see no way of telling jack that I want inputs from both at once15:29
holsteingartral: right.. and AFAIK, you cant15:29
holsteingartral: you are asking jack, with the ffado drivers to do that, and AFAIK, its not able to do that15:29
holsteinbut, its not a great idea, anyway, on any OS to mix devices like that15:30
holsteinbut, by all means, do your own research.. and see what workd for you15:30
holsteinyou can read, for example, http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/the-state-of-firewire-audio-interfaces-support-on-linux15:32
LAbotTitle: The state of FireWire audio interfaces support on Linux | Libre Graphics World (at libregraphicsworld.org)15:32
holstein"I'm currently hacking on a driver for devices based on the widely-used DICE chip. At this stage, it works only for playback, but I expect to support capturing, clock source selection, and synchronization of multiple devices soon."15:32
holsteinthat article is from 2012.. and AFAIK, that is not implemented.. and if it were, it would be depended on the hardware types, and support15:33
holsteinthere wont be much, specifically, that can be done this far downstream, though.. and, also, any changes made, like facilitating support for the digi002, may break something else15:34
holsteingartral: its quite challenging to find firewire users.. i *do* have access to a digi002, and a presonus firepod..15:35
holsteini certainly wouldnt mind doing some first-hand testing for you15:35
holsteinbut, for me, i decided not to bother with supporting the digi002..15:35
holsteinits *so* much easier/cheaper to get new hardware, these days, that supports linux "better"15:36
holsteinassuming alsa firewire supports the devices, and, likely it wont, since, you need "hack-ish" drivers to force it to work, you could use http://manual.ardour.org/setting-up-your-system/using_more_than_one_audio_device/15:37
holsteini might take it in stages.. try taking a few internal audio devices, and make an alsa device that jack can use.. internal, or and internal + usb15:38
holsteinthen, move onto the firewire setup, which should be worse..15:38

enrryok, so I guess I can use them importing with carla VST, right?20:37
