Yes dumb as in only sends MIDI (and may even be powered over USB).
The problem I have is that I don't know what keyboard it will be. The idea is
that I just take my netbook and plug in what is available.

That's encoraging. If a cheap one works easily, there's how that a slightly
better one will be OK too - if that's not too optimistic!
Also, Alsa MIDI suits me. It's what I've been using up to now on my main
setup :)
