Hi (Clemens and all),

Thanks for the quick helpful reply --- it does appear that I was quite
confused (I'm more accustomed to Linux server admin than desktop
configs, I fear), incorrectly assuming the issue was with Haswell
support... However, I'm still having issues. More inline below.

Yep, here's my Realtek chipset giving analog audio.

> Tell PulseAudio that you want to use the other card.

I'm not at all familiar with PA, but I read up on it a bit after your
pointer. I consulted the following pages:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/14077/how-can-i-change-the-default-audio-...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/71863/how-to-change-pulseaudio-sink-with-...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/69820/how-do-i-set-a-pulseaudio-card-prof...
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples

Here's what I actually did.

(1) I modified '/etc/pulse/default.pa' to include:

load-module module-stream-restore restore_device=false

Was this really necessary (for below steps)?

(2) I restarted the pulse audio server by logging out (and back in),
since I don't use system-wide PA (which could be restarted by
init scripts)

(3) I executed the following:

pacmd set-default-sink 1

In retrospect, I don't think this was necessary, as I now
believe that the Realtek audio card was already the default.

(4) I can now successfully hear audio. Great!

(5) However, it seems like I cannot properly get audio working for
multiple users logged into X simultaneously (switching between
them via XFCE user-switching and GDM greeter), where both are
using various pulse-audio sources... I would expect (want?) PA
to just cut from one use to the other, depending upon which user
is the active X screen.

Thoughts on this remaining problem (#5, above), please?

I've attached some output from 'aplay -l' and 'pacmd info' to the
bottom of this email, in case it helps. Further suggestions greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!
