Progress! That works with pulse on or off.
Being somewhat brave I tried
jackd -d alsa -d  plughw:0,1
But, when I started audacity it killed jack.
JackProcessSync::LockedTimedWait error usec = 5000000 err = Connection timed out

Driver is not running

Cannot create new client

jackd: ../common/JackGraphManager.cpp:44: void

So, maybe not so much progress :)
