You might be interested in my program xpmidi, available at
http://mellowood.ca/xpmidi/index.html

It's a bit short on docs ... but it's python source ...

I use this to display a pdf score and play a midi background track at
the same time. Permits playlists, as well as selection of individual
tracks.

Works for me :)
