I know the hi-fi track on a domestic VHS/Betacam was derived originally fro=
m the NICAM signal but you're probably right it wasn't put down to tape in =
the same format...
Actually further searching seems to confirm it is just FM modulated analogu=
e audio. Can't find any specifics like bandwidth etc though.
Either way you're not going to get any tape compression from bouncing to it=
and back.
