on the one hand, the linux audio ecosystem allows :
1) developers to create new applications largely independently of
the limitations of any given plugin API,
or odd foibles of a particular host application
2) users to start up any given music/sound application independently
3) users to connect more or less any music/sound applications
together in arbitrary ways, and
have them all share tightly synchronized output to the audio interface
4) all apps get network audio access via NetJACK without any of
them writing a single line of code
on the other hand, yes, its a bit of a pain in the ass.
