it has been that way from the very beginning.
distro's came second to the own-rolled. never forget that! distro's
are not supposed to be embedded, or they wouldn't be distro's: they'd
be "some device X, being used".
the hardware wrapping embedded linux (or any similar kernel) *is* the distro.
