barjacHi - I see 1.14.0 is released. I package several projects for a linux distro that use lv2, however we are in release freeze and I don't really want to try to push rebuilds to the whole stack this late. Is it reasonable to stick with 1.12.0 or are there critical fixes in 1.14.0?22:38
drobillaLV2 itself doesn't contain critical fixes (ever, really), but things added and the stack is quite improved22:40
* drobilla shrugs22:40
barjacdrobilla: OK thanks - I understand it's not really a question you can answer fully but that helps :)22:41
drobillaNobody's going to die if you don't? :)22:41
rgareusfamous last words22:41
barjacdrobilla: :)22:41
drobillaIf your release cycle is long it might be more important to update it...22:42
barjacdrobilla: About 9 months22:42
barjacdrobilla: OK thanks - I have to go - we will discuss it and decide :)22:46
rgareusbarjac: if you update liblilv & friends,  note that the new version will now refuse to load LV2 plugins which have invalid .ttl files22:48
rgareusolder liblilv will just print warnings (and the plugin may or may not work correctly).22:48
barjacrgareus: Thanks for the warning22:49
rgareusif you update liblilv, also validate lv2 plugin which are packaged.22:49
rgareusmost plugins have meanwhile been fixed upstream.22:49
rgareusbarjac: if I may ask, what distro do you package for?22:50
barjacrgareus: Mageia22:50
* rgareus feels he is getting old22:51
aombk2 until windows and osx hosts implement lv2, is it possible to use lv2 plugins with wrappers / bridges / something like carla?22:51
rgareusthere was a time when I knew about most if not all linux distros22:51
barjacrgareus: https://www.mageia.org/en-gb/22:52
rgareusaombk2: the only publicily released code that I know about is carla.22:52
rgareusbarjac: ta.  At least I've heard of Mandriva :)22:53
rgareusbarjac: Paris based?22:53
rgareusmmh 17eme,  too late. I can't walk there anymore :)22:54
barjacrgareus: Yes Mageia started as a fork of Mandriva - yes based in France primarily but it's a community distro with contributors worldwide - I'm in the UK22:54
aombk2i want to port my prototypes, make them cross platform. i am looking at juce, wdl-ol, dpf and lv2. if i choose lv2, will people be able to use them in windows and osx hosts using carla? (i am not sure i understand how carla works)22:55
rgareusaombk2:  DPF can produce  LV2s  and VSTs.22:55
aombk2yes but not AU22:56
rgareusaombk2: it depends on your goals, but realistically most casual-users on OSX or Windows won't use carla.22:56
barjacrgareus: Must say good-night and thanks before the clock strikes midnight here :)22:57
rgareusaombk2: if your main goal is  /good DSP/  and you care less about the GUI:   http://faust.grame.fr/ is awesome22:57
aombk2oh yes i have to try faust as well22:58
aombk2i really like the cross platform approach of lv222:58
aombk2too bad there is not much support yet22:58
rgareusbit of a chicken/egg situation.  there are only a few portable plugins that work x-platform.23:00
rgareuscompared to hundreds of thousands of VSTs..23:00
*** barjac has quit IRC23:01
drobillaYeah.  Needs work, few people into it, and the good ol' portable UI problem bites most23:01
rgareusthe nice aspect of LV2 is also session-compat.   while you may get an AU and VST of the same plugin.  moving a DAW session between machines: you'll loose state23:01
rgareuswith LV2 that works nicely23:01
aombk2interesting23:02
drobillaOne Of These Days I'll write an AU wrapper23:02
rgareuse.g , Ableton Live Windows has no clue   that a given VST is the same as some AU from  Live/OSX session.     but OSX/LV2 and Windows/LV2 do have the same state23:03
drobillaEvery time I investigate this possibility so far it usually stops at attempting to find something concretely meaningful in the AU documentation :)23:03
drobilla(I imagine Apple must rely on XCode templates to serve as real documentation or something, because it's damned near impossible to figure out how to actually do anything from the code up)23:03
rgareusdrobilla: I'll supplement it with a VST wrapper.23:04
drobillargareus: Given the lead time I might just end up massaging that into an AU version :)23:04
rgareusdrobilla: the problem I see: no host will have the motivation to implementa native LV2 support. and wrapper can only go so far23:04
rgareusdrobilla: I'm already done since 2 months23:04
drobillargareus: True.23:04
aombk2VST and AU wrappers would be awesome23:04
rgareusbut it's not yet public, waiting on some Harrison <> Steinberg deal.23:05
drobillaI can't really blame them ATM with all the libs you need to collect and whatnot, but that'll get dealt with another one of these days23:05
drobillaJalv probably needs to become a truly native non-Jack host on the other platforms as well23:05
rgareusthat's be great23:09
rgareuswell, portaudio may suffice23:09
drobillaTrue.  Never been a fan but that was because the JACK sucked years ago...23:28
