sirriffsalothpHey people! Is there any way of using both jack on an external sound card and alsa? Can't work out how to have sound coming from my machine and from my sound card at the same time07:08
sirriffsalothpAlso, anyone know if an Onyx 1640i will work on kxstudio? Is it compatible since it's firewire I believe?07:09
sirriffsalothpThere's an Onyx 1640i here, can it be used with say kxstudio or ubuntustudio? It's firewire I believe07:10

jimsirriffsalothp, jack can connect to hardware sound drivers, like alsa. in that case, jack would make the ins and outs of the sound card available08:13
jimso they can be connected to08:14
jimkxstudio has a thing called cadence, which helps you start jack, pulse, bridges and connect to alsa (or other) sound drivers08:36
sirriffsalothpjim: but I'd like to run jack on the external, and just run my internal sound card normally at the same time08:41
bill-augersirriffsalothp:  you can do that easily08:42
bill-augerjack can connect to furewire devices also08:42
bill-augeropen cadence and go to the JACK settings and choose the device you want to use08:42
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: guess I'll have to goof around with it then. Also, how on earth do I disable the screen lock completely here? Trying to listen to seminars and it locks out. The settings don't seem to have a disable option08:43
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: aha, but in the alsa interface I can only either use my external or internal, but not both at the same time. Where do I utilize the other one?08:45
bill-augertry xscreensaver-demo08:46
bill-augeryou said you wanted JACK only for the external card - and ALSA for your internal card08:46
sirriffsalothpNo such program or option to install according to commandline08:46
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: right, but I see no "jack" option standalone here?08:47
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: are you saying I can run jack for both devices?08:47
bill-augeryou could but not with cadence08:47
bill-augerjust open cadence and go to the JACK settings and choose the device you want to use08:48

bill-augerfor the screensaver setting it is probably on your menu under preferences or settings or something like that08:49
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: I'm not that much of a noob, that I can do :P What I want to do is have sound going in and out of my external, but also from my internal sound card when I want at the same time08:49
sirriffsalothpLooked there already :P08:49
bill-augeri dont use ubuntu so i dunno - search the web for "ubuntu disable screen saver"08:49
bill-augerif you want sound to go to and from both sound cards you can use the alsa_in and also_out commands08:51
bill-augeror just run wires from linein<->lineout08:51
sirriffsalothpbill-auger: almost forgot about those commands, I'll give it a try later. Aren't you running kxstudio?08:51
bill-augerno kxstudio is ubuntu08:51
bill-augerkxstudio is a distro but also a package repo - i have the kxstudio tools installed on debian08:53

bill-augeranother way to accomplish what you want is with the pulseaudio bridge of you have pulseaudio  running08:56

jimhmm... I set up deb-src lines in a debian, and built the cadence packages, and they work fine09:00
jimthe package metadata isn't filled out completely, so that means I have to read the control file to find the build depends09:01
bill-augeryou did not need to build anything - the binaries are in the repo too09:02
jimbut I did that, and the packages built... I installed them, and I got pulse, jack and alsa to cooperate at the same time...09:02
jimin the debian repo?09:02
bill-augerin the kxstudio repos09:03
bill-augerall i had to do was install the kxstudio-repos deb package and everything works OOTB09:03
jimif they were there, I would have installed them... the ones in the kx repo are mostly statically linked, and instead I wanted them to be linked against libs that -are- in the debian repo... and I accomplished that...09:04
jimoh, I know it does, I tried that too009:04
jimwhat I wanted to avoid like the plague that it is, was importing a foreign dependency tree... I accomplished that too09:05
jimthat can -easily- lead to disaster... and I'm living proof of that :)09:06

trombadaI got a question about /proc/asound/timers. When setting up jack with Cadence, we have basically 3 options: system, cycle and hpet. I'm using an external soundcard (m-audio) and a realtime linux kernel. Which of these 3 options would be the best for my case? I also have a midi controller and use it often12:37
trombadaG0: system timer : 4000.000us (10000000 ticks)12:37
trombadaG3: HR timer : 0.001us (1000000000 ticks)12:37
trombadathese are the first 2 lines of the timers file12:37
trombadafound no much info to help me decide which option I should go with12:39
trombadaany clues?12:39

rgareustoo late for trombada,  but the timers "system, cycle and hpet"  for jack are *only* used for calculating x-run duration.16:04
rgareusit has zero effect on anything audio or midi.16:04
JackWinterrgareus: doesn't jack use high res timers if they are available?16:05
rgareusJackWinter: it uses the soundcard's interrupt16:06
rgareuswhich is precise.16:06
dreamerfalktx|work: annoying as F :/16:07
JackWinterfor audio yes.  at least hopefully it's precise, otherwise your in trouble ;)16:08
rgareusJackWinter: well, there is some additional API:  samples_since_cycle_start()  -- that can be useful for e.g. video applications. the jack-client is run <sometime> in the cycle.16:08
rgareusJackWinter: likewise for MIDI16:08
rgareusJackWinter: the jack-client gets timestamps for every event in the current cycle.  and those timestamps are generated by the alsa kernel driver.16:09
rgareusnot by jack16:09
JackWinterthat's the only clock that is really valid for audio, anything else would be fscked up16:09
rgareusdreamer: "amazon download" ?16:10
dreameryeah16:10
rgareusdreamer: what's that?16:10
dreamerE: Failed to fetch https://github-cloud.s3.amazonaws.com/releases .. etc etc16:10
dreamerfor ardour5 the .deb is fetched from github16:10
dreamerwhich gives a 505  HTTP Version not supported16:11
rgareusaah, so really a github issue.  maybe they didn't pay their bills :)16:11
rgareusI thought someone started selling ardour on  http:://amazon.com :)16:12
dreamercould be an apt issue. apparently on ubuntu the download works16:13
falktx|workrgareus: it's a debian issue afaik. the redirect from amazon aws causing issues16:13
dreamernow I need to find this file manually somewhere (forgot the link .>)16:13
falktx|workrgareus: only happens on latest debian testing16:13
falktx|workdebian testing and ubuntu is fine16:13
rgareusdreamer: or maybe you just happened to get a different mirror16:13

dreamerthere we go: https://github.com/KXStudio/Repository/releases/download/gcc5/ardour_5.3.5-1kxstudio1v5_amd64.deb16:16
dreamerfalktx|work: so why are these files not in the regular repo?16:16
dreamer(bandwidth?)16:17
falktx|workthey're not compiled by me16:17
dreamerah ok16:17
