polossonHi there ! I wonder when the 16.04 LTS version of KXstudio Live-DVD will be available ? Just to plan my near future ;) (and I'm a bit impatient)12:59
falktx|workprobably never13:10
*** JackWinter has quit IRC13:10
falktx|workthe live-dvd is good at 14.0413:10
falktx|work16.04 has too many changes13:11
polossonOh ok, not interrested in Plamsa 5 ?13:11

polossonAnyway, will your packages repo be accessible / compatible with a Kubuntu 16.04 ?13:14
*** designbybeck has joined #kxstudio13:17
jimjust a comment, for debian, kxstudio is having the debian install ubuntu packages, and that's dangerous, as then you have debian's package dep tree, and also ubuntu's, which could cause the debian to install ubuntu's libc, and then it becomes a ubuntu (or it fails, and renders the install useless)13:34
jimit13:34
jimis working right  now, but any upgrading will alter the tree, and somehow merge them13:35
jimso, the package sources should also be built in a debian, and installed from it...13:36
jimif you use packages from ubuntu that are not in debian, you should port those across, and have an archive for them13:37
jim(probably, what you don't want is some upgrade trashing people's installations, breaking them, when a solution such as this should be easy13:38
jim)13:38

JackWinterjim: afaik, kxstudio links statically to it's deps in order to be able to work everywhere17:12
jimhmm, hi JackWinter...17:15
JackWinterjim: what i mean is that all that's in the repos is self contained, doesn't need any external deps17:16
JackWinteri might be wrong though, but that's what i remember from discussions17:17
*** Animtim_ has joined #kxstudio17:17
JackWinterfalktx`: will know ;)17:18
jimI see... the thing I noticed when aptitude was pulling packages down, was lots n lots of ubuntu packages,, I didn't actually check out the deps of them, when I have a good block of time free, I will...17:18

jimlike I say, things are working (and I'm practicing with starting the studio(s))17:21
jimI've seen crazy things happen with these dep trees even just sticking with one dist...17:21
*** willer has quit IRC17:23
jim(if ubuntu libc comes in, sometime after a future upgrade... I'm screwed :) so I'm gonna work on getting all the ubuntu stuff so that they dep to debian packages, make it safe for the next guy17:23
jimif I relax and do it at a pretty slow pace, the work should be done in a month (my own autobuilders set up in a week max)17:26
*** lykki has joined #kxstudio17:26
JackWinteri don't think you need to worry about that.  afaik, the stuff in kxstudio is statically linked, so doesn't need any runtime libs, and whatever you install from your distro will use the distros runtime libs.  but falktx` will know for sure, if no one else knows17:27
jimthe thing is, this project itself is worth doing that, and if it saves someone from a bad dependency trip to hell, that would be a good thing17:27
*** trig-ger_ has joined #kxstudio17:28
JackWinterbut if you want to help kxstudio packaging or doing something else, i'm sure that falktx`will be happy!17:28
jimif I can accomplish that much, then static linking would be optional17:28
jimthe process is similar to backporting, but also it should remove deps on ubuntu stuff... hopefully, not much is specifically (in the control file) dependent on ubuntu, and so the builds should go well17:31
JackWinteri steered you in this direction, because it's the easiest way to explain how to get jack and pulseaudio working together, doing it manually takes a lot of explaining and possibly giving bad advice due to not knowing the specifics of the various debian distros.  afaik kxstudio users are happy bunch, whilst i've seen other debian users struggle with some of this stuff17:31
JackWinterhappy i could get you making music though, it's normally more fun than setting it all up (unless you're really into computers)17:32
JackWinterbut even then it's hard sometimes to get all the information one needs together17:32
jim(here's my own motivation... I don't think I can upgrade now, I'm not blaming anyone tho, because I built a test debian just to test, and I did see the stuff come in from ubuntu, so installing it on the nontest one, was my decision17:33
jim)17:33
jimsay an upgrade comes along, and debian has a new libc... anything that depends on that libc of the version that got replaced will be pulled in if the replacing libc is a later version17:35

jimthose are two scenarios I'm a bit scared of... if either happens, I don't know what will happen... the dep trees are robust in themselves but fragile if other versions of debian are involved, or other dists (from the pov of my own install... a ubuntu user should experience no pain since everything's ubuntu17:38
jimlemme start that conversation...17:38
