QuantumTontocan't really figure out why only laptop microphone is all thats available .. this machine has 2 input microphone/input jacks .. any ideas ?15:53
holsteinQuantumTonto: whats the goal?15:54
QuantumTontotrying to plug guitar in via hardware input to run thru effects ..15:54
holsteinyeah, that likely wont work, regardless15:54
holsteini would get a simple/cheap USB interface that has an instrument input15:55
holsteinif you want to use your internal audio device, test it *independently* of the guitar input, since, the card its self is not designed to accept instrument inputs like that15:55
QuantumTontohow does that not work ? i've done it before on other systems .. .. how is a line in not work ?15:55
holsteinQuantumTonto: im not saying a line in isnt capable, and wont "work".. but, you can google search and research impedance, and see how its not appropriate.. please, do not take my word for it, or, think i am being combatitive15:56
QuantumTontolol ;) just trying to figure it out15:56
holsteinsure15:57
holsteinbut, the creators of that hardware, the internal audio sound card, likely never state "just plug a guitar in and jam".. also, there is the question of impedance15:57
QuantumTontothis pc does have 2 1/8 inch inputs though .. but youre saying its not good because of impedance (which i need to go look up) ?15:58
holsteinwhen i used to do that a *long* time ago, i would get away with it by using a mixer.. a stand alone hardware mixer.. i would plug instruments/mics into the mixer.. line out of it, into the computer line in15:58
holsteinQuantumTonto: sure, i realise, you have 2 jacks that are shaped the same15:58
holsteinQuantumTonto: please, research what the manufacturer *expects* you to plug into those inputs.. it will *not* be a guitar15:58
holsteinso, what do i suggest?15:59
holsteinplease test the device with something that the manufacturer *does* expect.. test with a line out from something appropriate15:59
QuantumTontohmm so whats the difference between a mic jack and a line in ?15:59
holsteinQuantumTonto: many things.. and *neither* are for what yo uare using.. a guitar15:59
holsteinQuantumTonto: both of those are for consumer level things.. plugging an ipod in.. skype.. etc16:00
QuantumTontoOK lol i got it .. DON'T plug the guitar in directly ;)16:00
holsteinQuantumTonto: you can.. but, the input is not designed for a line in like that..16:00
QuantumTontoi gotcha16:00
QuantumTontolooks like i'll be recording single tracks and not getting a "live" setup16:01
QuantumTontoi AM using an analog mixer as well ..16:01
holsteinsure.. so what would i do?16:02
QuantumTontobut lining that in only gives one input for routing as opposed to a digital interface16:02
QuantumTontoso16:02
holsteinunplug all of that.. and test the hardware with linux.. the inputs and outputs.. get that working, *then* you can move on16:02
QuantumTontowhat WOULD you do16:02
holstein*and*, that gives you *2* inputs16:02
holsteinleft and right16:02
holsteindigital wont give you more16:02
QuantumTontoyeah well thats the thing .. far as i can tell .. only the "webcam" mic is being picked up ..16:03
QuantumTontonot the lines in ...16:03
holsteindigital vs analog is just that.. nothing to do with the amount of inputs16:03
holsteinQuantumTonto: the 'webcam' is one of the things i would unplug16:03
QuantumTontoits a laptop ...16:03
QuantumTontobuilt in mic16:03
holsteinQuantumTonto: then, thats likely part of the internal audio device. not the webcam16:04
QuantumTontowith two separate mic inputs that seem to be not working16:04
holsteinsure. just test if they are or not16:04
holsteinisolate, and test..16:04
QuantumTontoit is .. i said 'webcam' so you'd know what type of internal mic it was ..16:05
holsteinyou cant trust any of the labels, since, the creators of the hardware likely dont officially support alsa16:05
QuantumTontoas of now, the only input that seems to be "working" is the built-in internal microphone16:05
holsteinsure.. and all i can do is encourage you to do some testing, and tell you what i find16:06
QuantumTontothis is undesirable and im trying to figure out why the hardware inputs are not showing up ..16:06
holsteinon the internal devices like that, there are no ways to select, like that16:06
holsteini just plug something into the line in,and its routed on a hardware level16:06
holsteinor, all the in's are "just working" all the time.. which is not ideal for audio recording. these devices are not made for that16:07
holsteinthe "best" thing you can do, if you want to do audio recording is to get something that is intended for that16:07
holsteinthese days, $60 US can accomplish that..16:07
*** JackWinter has quit IRC16:08
QuantumTontoi own analog and digital hardware .. im trying to figure out how to use what ive got on this newly installed kxstudio .. ive had all this stuff working before on other distros and machines ...16:08
*** JackWinter has joined #kxstudio16:09
QuantumTontoits not working on this particular distro .. i do not know why16:09
QuantumTontoand thats what im tring to figure out16:09
holsteinsure.. so, fire up the live iso for what *does* work, and make a note of kernel versions and alsa versions16:09
holsteinyou likely didnt use jack with the other distos16:09
holsteindistros*16:09
holsteinand you may not need jack?16:09
holsteinanyways.. thats what KXstudio will be doing that is much different than what you are used to..16:10
QuantumTontowhat ? it doent use jack ?16:10
holsteinQuantumTonto: no, friend.. JACK is running by default in kxstudio16:10
holsteinQuantumTonto: thats  not the case with *any* other distro by default.. so, thats a data point i want to make you aware of16:11
QuantumTontojack is the basis of all linux audio .. of course its running ...16:11
holsteinwhen you say, others work, and kx doesnt, we can talk about the differences.. jack all the time, and running at boot is the kx default.. which you may not be used to16:12
QuantumTontoive setup my own systems16:12
QuantumTontowith jack16:12
QuantumTontoruinning audio apps ..16:12
*** JackWinter has quit IRC16:13
QuantumTontoim not asking about differences16:13
QuantumTontoor jack itself16:13
QuantumTontoim saying this system is by default using the internal microphone16:13
holsteinsure, friend16:13
QuantumTontoas opposed to the input jacks ..16:13
QuantumTontoand i do not know why16:13
holstein*you* are stating, kxstudio is not working, and, other distros have16:13
holsteinso, im just stating differences, since, i find that constructive16:14
holsteinif you dont, thats fine16:14
*** JackWinter has joined #kxstudio16:14
holsteinwhat i do is, stop jack, and test the hardware components independent of jack..16:14
QuantumTontowhat if i say i know theyre working ?16:14
holsteinif i say "wow, i do not know why that is happening.." i try and reduce the variables and test16:14
*** dtcrshr has joined #kxstudio16:15
holsteinjack is not needed for me to test hardware with alsa.. its actually just complicating that.. so, its a variable i remove16:15
JackWinterQuantumTonto: i missed the beginning, what is the problem?16:16
QuantumTontoi am running linux lite on a dual boot with kxstudio .. i can boot linuxlite, start jack, use hardware lines in, no problem .. boot kxstudio and no more lines in ...16:17
holstein10:53 < QuantumTonto> can't really figure out why only laptop microphone is all thats available .. this machine has 2 input microphone/input jacks ..  any ideas ?16:17
QuantumTontooh hi jack sorry did see that16:17
holstein10:53 < QuantumTonto> can't really figure out why only laptop microphone is all thats available .. this machine has 2 input microphone/input jacks ..  any ideas ?16:17
QuantumTontolol thanks holstein16:17
QuantumTonto=)16:17
holsteinsorry for the double paste16:17
JackWinterQuantumTonto: do you run jack on the right soundcard?  you might have 2, one the onboard and the other the webcam16:18
holsteinJackWinter: there is no webcam16:18
holsteinno seperate webcam16:18
holsteinthats an integrated laptop webcam.. the mic is part of the internal audio device16:18
QuantumTontowhat i have is either intel analog or intel digital .. normally i just use analog and have no issues ...16:19
JackWinteri was guessing that the laptop micin might be from a builtin webcam, just a stab in the dark16:19
holsteinQuantumTonto: so, you are using jack on a different device?16:19
JackWinterso run jack on the intel analog device?16:19
QuantumTontoyes16:19
QuantumTontoholstein no16:19
QuantumTontojack yes16:19
holsteinwhat i would do is, start what distro *is* working, and make a note of the kernel version and alsa versions..and check the jack config, and try replicating that *exactly* in kx16:19
JackWinterQuantumTonto: what does "cat /proc/asound/cards" say?16:20
QuantumTontogood idea holstein .. sec for "cat"16:20
QuantumTonto 0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel16:21
QuantumTonto                      HDA Intel at 0xf5500000 irq 4716:21
QuantumTonto 1 [Loopback       ]: Loopback - Loopback16:21

QuantumTontoholstein p.s. the usb audio device i have has insufficient monitor volume .. which is why i've gone analog ;)16:37
JackWinterQuantumTonto: looks like you have several playback and capture devices, maybe you are running jack on a subdevice16:48
JackWinterwhat device do you have configured for use with jack?16:48
QuantumTontoi just copied .asoundrc and .jackdrc from working system .. going to try that ..16:49
JackWinterjust guessing though16:49
QuantumTontojust the intel analog is what its currently using ..16:49
JackWintercan you paste the .jackdrc (not that i think that kxstudio uses it as it uses jack2 by default)16:50
JackWinterand i don't think your .asoundrc can have anything at all to do with it16:50
QuantumTontowhich one would you like to see .. the kxstudio one or the one im using on the other system ?16:50
JackWinteri guess the kxstudio one16:50
QuantumTontoidk if any of this will do anything .. im just trying =D16:50
JackWinterbeh, or both ;)16:50
JackWinterdon't have jack-dbus running and don't remember the commands to see what it uses.  and i don't use kxstudio at all, but am a long time jack user16:51

QuantumTontooh um didnt paste ..16:52

QuantumTontooh yeah16:54

JackWintertry to change that to hw:016:56
QuantumTontowell i renamed the original files .. we will see ..16:56
QuantumTontoso far same results16:57

QuantumTontoso i had an epiphany: when plugging in a hardware device the computer auto-detects it and automagically switched to that input instead of using the onboard mic, this however is NOT happening in KXStudio ..17:38
QuantumTontoin KX its not being detected and auto-switching to the new input ...17:38
QuantumTontop.s. solved the boot issue ;)17:39
QuantumTontoso idk if the auto-input detect is somehow disabled in KX ? and its only seeing the onboard mic .. idk ...17:40
