alexpolevoyHey everyone. I have two big problems with KXStudio software, namely JACK and KlangFalter. First, JACK seems to have too much xruns even on low CPU load. Also, playback sometimes freezes for some seconds and then goes on. It happens especially often when I watch something on Youtube. Yesterday this even ruined a rehearsal recording: JACK freezed and then Ardour stopped recording saying my disk subsystem is too slow, but in fact it's not. It was12:00
alexpolevoyrecording only two channels in 32/88200. Not a big deal for a modern PC, amirite?12:00
alexpolevoyAnd the second problem is related to Klangfalter. It consumes too much CPU while generating gazillions of xruns, making editing tasks literally impossible. Sounds cracks as hell, playback can even slow down if I enable Klangfalter. When I switch it off, playback goes way smoother, but if I enable it again, there's a big chance of Ardour crash12:02
rghvdbergare you using lowlatency kernel ? is jack setup ok (realtime ?)12:04
alexpolevoyMy system is Kubuntu 15.04 with KXStudio repos, software is updated just this morning. Kernel is 3.19.0-22-lowlatency, my user is in audio group12:04
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: sure it's realtime. I've been using Linux for recording for a couple of years, so I know what am I doing and what a proper JACK setup is12:05
rghvdbergokidoki12:05
rghvdbergI once tried 15.04 but quickly replaced it with 14.04. 15.04 wouldn't play nice with wine + vst plugins12:06
rghvdbergI'm guessing it's a 15.04 thing ..12:07
rghvdbergbtw : wouldn't play nice => no sound at all and crashing :-)12:07
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: screw winvsts with wine along. btw, it's working fine on my PC, but JACK just kills me12:08
falktx`32/88200 requires a very powerful cpu to run all that12:09
falktx`it's probably the resampling12:09
rghvdberg@alexpolevoy I think there's nothing wrong with using best of both worlds :-)12:09
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: I suspect my problem can be related to frequency scaling, but I can't even find out how to manage it. The governors are all unavailable12:09
falktx`try finding some IR files that match that sample rate12:09
falktx`that should avoid the xruns12:09
falktx`bbl12:10
alexpolevoyfalktx`: I have Core i5, this could be enough for 192 KHz if talking stereo12:10
falktx`at 32 frames? depends on the plugins12:10
rghvdbergI can only switch between powersave and performance ..12:10
alexpolevoyfalktx`: nope, bits12:10
alexpolevoyfalktx`: frame size is 25612:10
falktx`ah12:10
falktx`hmm, then anyway, try finding some pre-resampled IR files12:10
falktx`88200 is a weird sample rate to use12:11
falktx`bbl12:11

* rghvdberg is trying to build helm :-)12:11
alexpolevoyfalktx`: I tried, but it occurs to me even at 44100 Hz12:11
alexpolevoybtw, now CPU usage is low (around 6%), but crackles prevail over actual recorded sound12:13
alexpolevoylaptop is on AC, so it should run in Perfomance mode by default anyway12:14
rghvdbergoh man ... it would drive me crazy12:14
rghvdbergtried 14.04 ?12:14
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: yes, but it was slow as hell12:15
rghvdbergoh really ?12:16
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: yes, 15.04 is way faster on my system. It boots fast, UI responds much better12:17
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: no need to say it looks much cleaner12:17
rghvdbergwhat DE ?12:18
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: it's Kubuntu, so what it could be? KDE 512:18
rghvdbergoh yeah KDE5 is very sexy !12:19
*** falktx has joined #kxstudio12:19
rghvdbergI upgraded from 14.10 for that but then the audio stuff wouldn't work as I liked and I tried several 14.04 distros (kubuntu, ubuntu xubuntu etc)12:20
rghvdbergfinally settled for Mint because I had some graphics issues with some vst stuff which would only work correct with mint12:21
rghvdbergturned out I actually liked Unity the most :-)12:21
alexpolevoyrghvdberg: my system was working good until some updates were installed. I guess this problem can be a kernel regression result (I encountered something like that before, it was USB 3.0 issue)12:22
alexpolevoywell, it's not frequency scaling anyway12:24
alexpolevoyI haven't even installed cpufreqd12:24
rghvdbergaaarrgghhh /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGL12:26
rghvdberggiving up .. waiting for @falktx to package helm :-)12:30
*** alexpolevoy has quit IRC12:34

alexpolevoyinstalled some packages related to CPU freq scaling and rebooted the system. Almost no changes: governors are still unavailable in Cadence, Klangfalter still causes the same gazillions of xruns, and it crashed Ardour again when I switched it off12:39
alexpolevoywow. starting a Pulseaudio bridge freezed Cadence and JACK12:42
alexpolevoySo I have another question: what the hell is going on?12:42
alexpolevoyalso, there's this in top output: 78 root     -51   0       0      0      0 S   5,6  0,0   0:28.11 irq/16-ehci_hcd12:45
alexpolevoyIt's always on the top of top and consumes around 6%12:46
falktxhave you tried a different soundcard?12:47
alexpolevoyfalktx: yes, I tried switching to an internal one, but result is the same. Also, I have no other USB audio12:48
alexpolevoyfalktx: I basically can't check even if I want it12:48
alexpolevoyfalktx: also, I'm getting “retire_capture_usb: X callbacks suppressed” in my dmesg output12:50
falktxsomething is causing all that cpu overhead12:50
falktxa webcam?12:50
alexpolevoyfalktx: I know that most probable variant is that it's an IRQ issue12:51
alexpolevoyfalktx: I don't know. It's a laptop, I can't just disable it12:51
alexpolevoyfalktx: no plug to pull12:51
falktxhelm builds12:53
alexpolevoyfalktx: previously, I had this issue with Wi-Fi on, but this time switching off Wi-Fi never helps12:53
alexpolevoyfalktx: now I have Cadence, Audacious and JACK hanging and not terminating with killall. will try kill -912:56
alexpolevoyfalktx: hmm... Konsole is also frozen12:56
falktxwait12:56
falktxremember the reisub for saving from freezes12:57
falktxif your system locksup completely, do this:12:57
falktx1. hold "alt"12:57
falktx2. press "sysrq" (might need Fn key)12:57

alexpolevoyanother dumb question. Is CPU load of 5% normal if only QSynth and ALSA/Pulseaudio bridges are launched?13:29
alexpolevoyI'd consider it normal if I had an ancient CPU like Pentium III, but this happens on my Intel Core i513:30

zhanshanI used cadence to run jack audio output together with an external audio interface and blacklisted my internal sound device14:01
zhanshannow I don't have the ext device for some days and need the internal sound card again14:01
zhanshanremoved the int s card from blacklist, restarted, but still didn't work to run jack14:01
zhanshansee log file pls: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/794b362e/14:02
alexpolevoyzhanshan: it's probably grabbed by Pulseaudio14:04
zhanshansecond try: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/4770b0b5/14:04
zhanshanalexpolevoy I deleted pulseaudio I think14:04
zhanshanat least I get an error if I try to start pavucontrol: 'Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK'14:05
alexpolevoyfalktx: here's the video of Ardour crashing and glitching with Klangfalter14:06
alexpolevoyfalktx: https://youtu.be/-3vI26cTbHc14:06

falktxsudo apt-get purge pulseaudio*14:07
zhanshanfalktx that was it, thank you so much!14:08
falktxalexpolevoy: did you try some other ir plugin?14:09
falktxalexpolevoy: there's at least convo and ir.lv214:09
alexpolevoyfalktx: I will now, but lots-of-xruns problem still persists and other plugins can't even come close to Klangfalter in means of user experience. I've never seen a better impulse browser than Klangfalter's, for example14:11
alexpolevoyfalktx: I mean, sometimes even plain recording with no processing at all can be ruined by a huge pack of xruns which comes out from literally nowhere14:12
alexpolevoyfalktx: btw, I don't have a plugin called “convo”14:13
alexpolevoyfalktx: well, “LV2 Convolution Stereo” gave the same result: glitches are almost all I hear14:16
falktxdid you try pre-resampled wavs?14:16
alexpolevoyfalktx: not this time, but tried previously, when first encountered this problem. Result is bit to bit the same14:17
alexpolevoyfalktx: pre-resampling worked (for some seconds at least), but what to do with sound stopping suddenly?14:29
alexpolevoyfalktx: xruns still appear, though not that frequently. This could be acceptable if I only needed playback, but I need recording as well14:32
